“Come get your bacon fix!”

About a week ago, a friend of mine invited me to the food tasting session of OMB, a bacon-inspired cafe. OMB stands for “Oh My Bacon”, and it encompasses around bacon-inspired dishes through & through. Located over at Dunlop Street, OMB is just a short distance away from nearby cafe Rouse, & they have officially open for business just yesterday.

I do love me some bacon (Who doesn’t?), and hence decided to head down to OMB for a second time today to try more of their menu & more importantly – for the sake of food photography.

Aesthetic
When you first walk into OMB, you’ll be greeted with quirky illustrations, text & quotes all around the interior; all of which relates to bacon in some form. The somewhat industrial decor is complemented with a pop of teal, mustard & rhodamine colours. The space of OMB is quite spacious, filling up the entire first level of a shophouse along Dunlop Street.

Branding
One key focuses of OMB is that they are establishing themselves as not just a cafe, but as a brand. Their love for bacon is translated into everyday merchandise such as aprons, pillows & shirts; all of which are designed & made locally. I do applaud them for creating a recognizable brand from OMB, with their quirky illustratons of bacon – something which makes them stand out among the numerous cafes around these parts.

Food
As mentioned previously, OMB’s menu relates to the key ingredient that is bacon and is probably the first ever bacon-inspired cafe in Singapore. The food here is not for the faint hearted & it’s definitely targeted to lovers of bacon. Their menu ranges from all-day breakfast dishes & pastas to bacon, bacon & more bacon. OMB doesn’t mess around when it comes to bacon & it is even included in their brownies & ice-cream. (Oh yes, please!) Of course, if you’re with friends who aren’t bacon-lovers (They are probably crazy.) or can’t have bacon due to religion, there are also non-bacon dishes such as Fish & Chips.

Price
The prices for these bacon goodies are fairly average, with mains hovering around the 15 dollar mark. The only pricey exception is the Bacon Bomb, one of OMB’s signature dishes. The upside is that (If I remembered correctly), there is no GST or service fees.

Root Beer Float ($6.50) The key to a good root beer float is the ice-cream and OMB's rendition nailed it. The ice-cream here is made in-house & it perfectly complements the root beer. Though it's vanilla ice-cream, there seems to be a hint of caramel (I think) in it & it's oh-so-divine.

Hershey's Hot Chocolate ($5.50) It has been said that you can tell a good hot chocolate when it congeals upon cooling. This was basically the epitome of a good hot chocolate, deliciously thick & chocolatey; a definite must-try.

Oomph Shrooms (Normally $6) The wonderful staff from OMB surprised my friend & I when they gave us these complimentary mushroom soups. The soups also come with a slice of bacon! Both my friend & I agreed that the soup tasted really good, with a flavourful taste & a nice amount of blended mushroom bits. While it's not the thick kind, it was still really delicious & it's great to drink directly out of the cup. Perfect for a rainy day perhaps.

The NPH Platter ($18) Chorizo Sausage, Prawn & Asparagus Wrapped in Bacon This was another dish that my companions & I had during the food tasting. I actually spotted another table having it & just knew that it was something to try. The platter is basically inspired by Neil Patrick Harris, hence the name! Bacon wrapped anything is always awesome which makes this such a great platter. The Chorizo sausage have since been replaced with wine infused smoked duck on their current menu. I do think that the price may be sort of a stretch, but alas, that's starters for you.

Bacon & Egg Cup ($12) Eggs & Sun-Dried Tomatoes in a Bacon Cup, Rosti Another dish worth trying over at OMB is their Bacon & Egg Cup which consists of three bacon cups served on a bed of rosti. There are two ways of eating this actually, one is to plop an entire bacon cup into your mouth & let the egg burst into a wondrous mix of flavours. Another way is to cut open the bacon cups to let the runny yolk flow all over the bed of rosti. I prefer the former method! Recommended.

Bacon Love, Truly ($15) Candied Bacon, Bacon Jam, Pita Bread Yet another dish we had during the food tasting was OMB's take on the BLT. Initially, I thought that it didn't look like much but was proven wrong after I took a bite. The bacon works wonders with the soft pita bread, giving the BLT a nice crunch. Presently, you can choose between Classic, Candied or Spicy Bacon when you order the BLT over at OMB.

Carbonara ($15) Spaghetti, Eggs, Cheese, Bacon OMB's Carbonara is based on a non-creamy, traditional Italian recipe. My friend actually preferred the creamy variations better & found OMB's rendition to be somewhat dry. I on the other hand, thought that it tasted quite nice on its own & was kinda like an Aglio in a way.

Bacon Bomb ($28) Combination of Minced Pork & Beef, a Cheese Center, Rolled with Bacon, Served with Mashed Potatoes Basically the Pièce De Résistance of OMB, the Bacon Bomb is not to be missed. OMB is also currently having an opening promotion for their Bacon Bomb! Right now it's going for $14 until the end of May, whilst stocks last.

If you're ever a fan of Epic Meal Time, the Bacon Bomb is for you. This stunning piece of meat is not for the faint hearted, with it's combination of pork, beef, cheese all rolled with bacon. My companions & I even commented that this could be the new Christmas ham. Why serve a ham when you can stun your guests with a Bacon Bomb?! This was literally

My companions & I even commented that this could be the new Christmas ham. Why serve a ham when you can stun your guests with a Bacon Bomb?! This was literally “da bomb” and it’s definitely worth a try. Highly recommended.

The Cheese Cake ($5) The desserts of OMB, including the ice-cream, are all made by their in-house pâtissier. The cheesecake was pretty good; light, fluffy yet smooth at the same time.

Bacon Brownie ($4.50) With Bacon Ice-cream (additional $4.50) Yes! There is even bacon in their desserts! The delicious chocolate brownie is complemented with bacon bits, giving it a nice salty kick. You can also choose to top-up with vanilla or bacon ice-cream; of course I went for the latter. I just adored the ice-cream here, wish I could have a pint of it!

Jekyll & Hyde (6 pieces for $12) You've definitely heard about it. You've probably seen it on the internet. Now... it's finally real. Bacon dipped in dark & white chocolate! I was quite blown away by this to be honest. The sweetness of the chocolate works wonders with the saltiness of the bacon & there's a slight crunch which gives it an additional kick. This is the epitome of salty & sweet, a fantastic combination. Highly highly highly highly highly recommended.

Bacon Cookies Right before I left, the staff of OMB yet again surprised me with a complimentary box of bacon cookies! I do thank them for their wonderful hospitality & generosity, it really made my day! And yes, I BROUGHT HOME THE BACON!

Worth A Visit/Revisit?
I’m very impressed with OMB & I just love their whole concept revolving around bacon. The food here is all pretty fantastic & the aesthetic of the place is quite eye-catching as well. If you’re a lover of bacon, OMB is definitely not to be missed. I was also told that OMB will be running a promotion for students of the nearby art schools, so you can look forward to that! I’ll undeniably head back to OMB soon & bring my friends along for more bacon goodness! (Now please excuse me while I slip into a bacon coma.)
